Tolkien and the Battle of the Somme
I've just read this very interesting article in the New York Times about Tolkien's inspiration for much of The Lord Of The Rings coming from his experiences in the trenches during the Battle of the Somme (WW1). Here are some particularly interesting excerpts: “I have always been impressed that we are here, surviving, because of the indomitable courage of quite small people against impossible odds,” he explained.
